Islamabad, Aug 5, 2025: In a dramatic escalation of Brazil’s ongoing political crisis, former President Jair Bolsonaro has been placed under house arrest by the Supreme Court, marking a new chapter in the investigation into an alleged attempt to subvert the country’s democratic process following the 2022 elections.

Supreme Court Cracks Down Over Social Media Violations

The decision, issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, stems from Bolsonaro’s continued breach of restrictions on political communication. Authorities say Bolsonaro used his sons’ social media platforms to encourage opposition against Brazil’s judiciary and promote unrest.

To enforce the ruling, federal agents seized all mobile devices from his home. Bolsonaro must now wear an ankle bracelet and can only meet with immediate family or his legal team while under house arrest.

Alleged Coup Plot and Criminal Charges

The former president faces serious charges including orchestrating an attempted coup, inciting violence, and leading an armed conspiracy. These accusations are linked to the January 2023 invasion of government buildings in Brasília, carried out by Bolsonaro supporters rejecting the electoral win of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Legal experts warn that if convicted, Bolsonaro could face up to 12 years in prison, adding immense pressure on the country’s already divided political landscape.

Rising Tensions Between the US and Brazil

The legal proceedings have sparked tension with Washington. In a controversial move, the Biden administration imposed sanctions on Justice Moraes, claiming he overstepped his judicial powers. Brazilian President Lula rejected the sanctions, calling them “foreign interference” and publicly defending Moraes as a guardian of Brazil’s democratic institutions.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the legal actions against Bolsonaro and imposed new 50% tariffs on Brazilian exports—moves interpreted by analysts as political signaling in support of his longtime ally.

Eduardo Bolsonaro Denounces Asset Freeze

Bolsonaro’s son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, is also under scrutiny. The Supreme Court recently froze his financial assets over suspicions of lobbying American political figures to influence Brazil’s judicial process. Eduardo responded by accusing the court of political persecution, stating, “I won’t be silenced by abuse of power.”
