Islamabad, Aug 7, 2025: A powerful Taiwan earthquake today rattled the island’s eastern regions on Thursday afternoon, sending tremors across major cities but causing no visible damage. The quake hit at 3:45 PM local time, sparking momentary panic but no serious emergencies.
Quake Originated Offshore Near Yilan
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) confirmed the quake measured magnitude 6.2 and struck deep under the Pacific Ocean, approximately 129 kilometers southeast of Yilan County Hall. With a depth of 88 kilometers, the seismic activity was considered moderately deep, often leading to widespread but less destructive ground shaking.
Widespread Tremors Across Taiwan
Shaking was felt across several counties. The highest intensity reached Level 3 on Taiwan’s local scale in Yilan, Hualien, Nantou, Taichung, and Taitung. Other cities, including Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, and Chiayi, reported Level 2 tremors.
Taiwan’s seven-level seismic scale ranges from Level 1 (barely noticeable) to Level 7 (extreme shaking and damage). Residents in central and northern Taiwan also reported feeling the earthquake.

No Damage or Injuries So Far
Emergency services have not reported any casualties or serious structural damage. The authorities are closely monitoring for aftershocks and ensuring public safety in affected regions.
