Islamabad, Aug 8, 2025: Rising river levels across Gilgit-Baltistan have triggered severe erosion, cutting off key routes and affecting daily life in multiple regions.
In Hunza’s Morkhoon area, a major section of the Karakoram Highway washed away after intense river erosion, halting all traffic. Officials confirmed that the damage has isolated parts of the region, disrupting both tourism and trade.
Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq stated that the Chief Minister has ordered urgent restoration of the highway. Emergency teams and heavy machinery have been deployed to expedite repair work and restore connectivity as soon as possible.
In Skardu’s Zohok Kachura area, rescue operations are underway after a tragic boat accident left several tourists missing. Authorities have enforced Section 144, temporarily banning boating due to dangerously high lake water levels.
However, despite the ban, some tourists have attempted to access the lakes, prompting legal action against violators.
