Islamabad 8 August: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a critical flood alert for the Sutlej River and its associated tributaries, anticipating a surge in water levels starting August 13 due to the onset of a new monsoon spell.

The warning comes as monsoon rains are expected to intensify across Pakistan’s upper regions, raising concerns about potential flooding exacerbated by releases from upstream reservoirs.

PDMA forecasts that the Sutlej River could see increased water flow from August 13, driven by heavy monsoon rains and potential discharges from upper water bodies. The authority highlights Ganda Singh Wala as a key area where water levels may rise significantly, a development linked to an unusual increase in water levels at Indian dams over the past week, as noted by PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia.

He reported that the Bhakra Dam, situated on the Sutlej, is currently 61% full, while the Pong Dam holds 76% and Thein Dam 64% of their capacities, signaling a heightened risk as these reservoirs approach critical thresholds.

The alert urges local administrations to prepare for possible flash flooding, with PDMA instructing commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain vigilant. The agency emphasizes the need for preemptive measures, including monitoring water levels and ensuring evacuation plans are in place, especially in low-lying areas near the Sutlej and its tributaries.

This follows a season marked by significant monsoon impacts, with 162 deaths and 214 homes affected reported earlier this year.

As the monsoon’s sixth spell looms, PDMA’s proactive stance aims to mitigate risks, though the reliance on Indian dam data—often a point of contention—raises questions about coordination and accuracy. Residents are advised to stay updated via official channels as the situation develops.
