Islamabad, Aug 9, 2025: The Faizabad Interchange is set for a complete overhaul as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) abandons its earlier plan of merely widening its loops. Instead, the authority will redesign and expand the entire structure to provide a long-term fix for the chronic traffic congestion faced by commuters daily.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa on Friday. Initially, the CDA had floated tenders worth Rs. 200 million to widen the loops of the decades-old interchange, a key entry point to Islamabad and a frequent protest venue.
However, after reviewing the project, officials concluded that loop widening would offer only a short-term respite. “We aim for a solution that will serve the city for the next thirty years,” stated CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, confirming that the chairman has directed a full redesign.
Three leading consultancy firms are now working on a comprehensive master plan, which will be presented to the Interior Minister upon completion. Construction will roll out in phases, depending on the approved design and available budget.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had earlier instructed the CDA to address persistent traffic snarls, particularly on the loop linking Murree Road to the Islamabad Expressway. The redesigned Faizabad Interchange is expected to finally put an end to these long-standing traffic challenges.
