Islamabad, Aug 11, 2025: The run of British No.2 Cameron Norrie at the Cincinnati Open came to its end in a straight-sets loss to Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round. Seeded 32nd after a bye in the first round, Norrie had trouble with the sweltering 30°C weather and went down 6 -4, 6-3.
The 29-year-old defeated Bautista Agut in the first round of Wimbledon in a four sets battle as he launched his title run that took him to the quarter-finals. But this time the Spaniard gained the advantage early, breaking service of Norrie in the 4th game. Norrie somewhat rallied and made the first set deficit 5-4 but a double fault gave Bautista Agut the set.
The depleted Norrie, beaten in the second round of the Canadian Open last week by world No.99 Aleksandar Vukic, battled but gave up five match points in the second set. Bautista Agut, who had only returned to action after the Wimbledon, however, wrapped up the win in his second chance.
It is the second first round defeat on successive North American hardcourt tournaments of Norrie, who has only won three games against five losses since that first round loss that ended his SW19 campaign against Carlos Alcaraz. In the meantime, the top seed Alcaraz snapped out of his mid-match limping to defeat Damir Dzumhur 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 and will face Hamad Medjedovic in the next round.
