Islamabad, Aug 12, 2025: A long-discussed Oman Pakistan maritime ferry link is now edging closer to launch, as senior officials from both nations confirm major progress.

In a recent high-level meeting in Islamabad, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, and H E Fahad bin Sulaiman al Kharusi, Oman’s Ambassador to Pakistan, renewed their commitment to boost maritime cooperation. Talks covered the direct ferry service plan, trade expansion and sharing of port expertise.

H E Naveed Bokhari, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Oman, said that the project has reached an advanced stage. “Oman and Pakistan have shared a maritime bond for centuries and it is only natural to establish this connection. This route will benefit both trade and people-to-people ties,” he said, adding that discussions are now at ministerial level and expected to deliver results soon.

In 2024, Pakistan’s exports to Oman through ports were valued at about US$224mn. Chaudhry called for a major increase, suggesting joint infrastructure projects and stronger maritime logistics. He also pointed to Gwadar Port as a possible hub for the ferry link, forecasting trade and transit revenues between US$10bn and US$15bn annually.

Officials say the proposed Oman Pakistan maritime ferry link will not only enhance regional connectivity but also open fresh economic corridors between Oman, South Asia, and Central Asia. They also expect growth in tourism and easier movement for families with ties across the Arabian Sea.
