Islamabad, Aug 12, 2025: Islamabad is moving forward to enhance Pakistan-Indonesia relations by naming roads and installing reciprocal monuments in each other’s capitals. The initiative revives the sister city agreement signed between the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Jakarta in 1984.
Sources say the federal government has instructed the CDA to fully implement the agreement and submit proposals to make the collaboration more active. Plans include naming roads in Islamabad and Jakarta after each other’s notable personalities and installing monuments symbolizing friendship. A CDA official said these steps aim to give a visible and lasting shape to the two nations’ bond.
Islamabad already carries a tradition of honoring friendly countries. Examples include Iran Avenue, inaugurated in 2023 by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif alongside then-Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, and an interchange named after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this year. Other roads pay tribute to figures such as King Shah Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk of Turkey, Zhou Enlai of China, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, and Japan Road.

Parks like Argentina Park, Ankara Park, and Japanese Park also highlight Islamabad’s diplomatic connections. The city’s iconic Faisal Mosque, designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, stands as a symbol of Pakistan’s friendship with Saudi Arabia.
According to the CDA, detailed proposals in line with the 1984 MoU with Jakarta will be finalised and presented soon. These symbolic steps are expected to further deepen Pakistan-Indonesia relations through visible and meaningful gestures.
