Islamabad 13 August: The US helped avert Pakistan-India catastrophe during recent hostilities between Pakistan and India, preventing a potential catastrophe, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Tuesday.

“Obviously, we had an experience with Pakistan and India when there was a conflict, one that could have developed into something quite horrible,” Bruce told reporters at a press briefing. She recalled how senior US leaders — including the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State — moved swiftly to engage both sides through direct communication.

Bruce said the diplomatic push, involving urgent phone calls and mediation efforts, helped halt planned attacks and create conditions for dialogue. “It’s a very proud moment and a very good example of what Secretary Rubio is committed to… our top leaders were involved in stopping that potential catastrophe,” she noted.

The spokesperson stressed that Washington’s relationships with both Islamabad and New Delhi remain strong, crediting the administration’s personal outreach for fostering cooperation. “Our relationship with both nations is… good, and that is how we can bring differences together in this case,” she said.

Bruce also highlighted ongoing security cooperation with Pakistan, pointing to the recently concluded Pakistan-US Counterterrorism Dialogue in Islamabad. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to fighting terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations” and discussed ways to strengthen joint efforts against militant threats.

The joint statement from the talks underscored that sustained engagement between the US, Pakistan, and India would benefit the region and contribute to long-term stability.
