Islamabad, Aug 14, 2025: PSG coach Luis Enrique has taken a tough decision to cut down on veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in lieu of an emerging goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Although Donnarumma played a vital role in the PSG spoiling in the Champions League, Enrique decided to play a goalkeeper who is younger and in the current fashion of football which leaves the goalkeeper in possession of the ball.
Chevalier worked to PSG to beat Tottenham on penalty shots following a 2-2 draw in Udine. A Frenchman, 23 years old, signed from Lille, brings a different style. With his vision, passing and composure, Chevalier can play the role of an extra outfield team member when holding the ball. He was impressive in the Ligue 1 this previous year, where he received 11 clean sheets and was called to France national team.
Analysts add that his contemporary style works alongside the play-from-the-back style used at the club to give PSG a more tactical advantage. In Chevalier first appearance, PSG played with the comfort of playing out back but he was also conceded having lost a header to Spurs.

He redeemed himself by saving vital penalty in shootout. Looking to exploit small edges, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has said this move shows that PSG have taken goalkeeper roles further than merely shot-stopping.
Nevertheless, even though Donnarumma was world-class, Luis Enrique wanted another kind of player so that his tactical needs could be accommodated. The move by PSG depicts the trend of football where goalkeepers are increasingly involved in attack and passing. Donnarumma who can be bought with one year left on his deal is among the best keepers and is one of the desired options of teams such as Manchester City.
