Punjab is advancing towards launching Pakistan’s first electric taxi service through the Punjab E-Taxi Program, with the provincial government confirming the project’s financing structure. The initiative, previously approved earlier this year, now has a clear roadmap for subsidies, vehicle models, and operational logistics.

In the first phase, around 1,100 electric taxis are expected to hit the streets of Lahore. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has endorsed the financing framework, allowing banks to extend loans up to Rs. 6.5 million for each electric vehicle.

The government will cover the interest charges, while buyers will make a partially subsidized down payment. For vehicles costing between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the Punjab administration will contribute Rs. 585,000 toward the down payment, with banks financing the remaining amount.

A budget of Rs. 2 billion has been earmarked for the program, initially focusing on 1,100 Chinese-manufactured EVs. To facilitate smooth operations, 18 charging stations have already been installed across Lahore, with plans to expand the network further.
