Lahore, August 18, 2025 – The government has announced a major initiative to improve public convenience by converting some of Lahore’s busiest commercial areas into dedicated pedestrian zones.
The historic and crowded markets of Old and New Anarkali, Nila Gunbad, and Bakshi Market, located in the heart of Lahore, will be accessible only to pedestrians. Vehicular traffic will be completely prohibited in these areas.

This step has been taken to address the persistent traffic congestion in these markets, which has made walking difficult for pedestrians, particularly women, and has created challenges for traders operating in these commercial centers. The move is expected to make these areas safer and more accessible for visitors.
In addition to traffic reforms, the government has approved significant funds for urban renovation projects. Rs. 800 million has been allocated for the renovation of Shahdara Complex, while Rs. 370 million has been approved for the restoration of Lahore Fort.

The Planning & Development (P&D) Board has issued official notifications for these projects. The Walled City Authority will soon release new tenders for the upcoming works.
Officials say these initiatives are part of a broader effort to modernize Lahore’s infrastructure, preserve its historic landmarks, and create a pedestrian-friendly environment in the city’s most popular markets.
