An audit report has disclosed that between 2011 and 2016, as many as 449,714 passengers traveled on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) using free or heavily discounted tickets, causing the airline a loss of over Rs 9.04 billion in revenue.
According to the report, the airline’s management allowed 258,990 passengers to travel without paying any fare, ignoring the financial health of the institution. This practice alone resulted in a loss of Rs 5.55 billion.
In addition, during the same period, 190,724 passengers, including employees, were given discounts ranging between 25% and 95%, which led to a further loss of more than Rs 3.49 billion.
