Dongfeng has officially rolled out the Dongfeng Aeolus L8, a next-generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) built on the brand’s advanced Mach Electric Hybrid system. The setup combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, a strong electric motor, and a 30.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, producing an impressive total output of 355 horsepower.
Range and Real-World Testing
Under CLTC standards, the Aeolus L8 comes in two electric-only variants, offering driving ranges of 126 km and 185 km. However, results from the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC) showed the vehicle exceeding expectations, reaching 248 km on pure electric mode and an overall driving range of 2,245 km—making it one of the longest-range PHEVs in the global market.
Charging Speed and Fuel Efficiency
Efficiency is another strong suit of the Dongfeng Aeolus L8. Independent tests recorded fuel consumption at nearly 41.66 km per liter. Thanks to its 3C fast-charging capability, the battery can recharge from 20% to 80% in just 18 minutes under ideal conditions.
Safety and Smart Features
The Aeolus L8 is loaded with 28 Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions. Key highlights include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, parking assist, and traffic sign recognition. For safety, it comes equipped with six airbags and a digital rearview mirror. The cabin integrates modern AI-powered features, including an intelligent voice assistant developed using DeepSeek and ByteDance’s Doubao technology.
Global Expansion and Future Plans
Dongfeng is preparing to expand the Aeolus L8 to multiple international markets such as the Middle East and South America. Originally launched under the Fengshen brand in 2009, Aeolus has now evolved into a standalone division offering SUVs and sedans for mainstream buyers. Looking ahead, the company also aims to introduce solid-state battery EVs by 2026, promising ranges beyond 1,000 km with enhanced safety standards.
