Judge Frank Caprio, the beloved former Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court and the warm-hearted face behind the hit reality series Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after bravely battling pancreatic cancer.

His family confirmed that he died peacefully on Tuesday, August 20, surrounded by loved ones.

Caprio rose to international fame through Caught in Providence, where he was celebrated for handling everyday traffic violations with an uncommon blend of humor, understanding, and empathy. Clips from his courtroom — often featuring heartfelt moments with citizens — went viral across social media, amassing millions of views and turning him into a symbol of “justice with a heart.”

Tributes From Across the Nation

Affectionately known as “America’s kindest judge,” Caprio was admired for saying, “I don’t wear a badge under my robe — I wear a heart.” His philosophy resonated with people far beyond Rhode Island.

Governor Dan McKee called him a “true Rhode Island treasure” and ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor. “Judge Caprio didn’t just serve the public — he connected with them. He showed that justice and humanity can go hand in hand,” McKee said in a heartfelt statement.

His Courageous Health Battle

In December 2023, Caprio publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Throughout his treatment, he regularly updated his 1.7 million Instagram followers, sharing moments of vulnerability and hope. Even during chemotherapy, his positive spirit inspired thousands.

Singer-songwriter Jewel expressed her admiration after seeing one of his treatment updates, saying she felt “honored to bring a bit of comfort” to the judge during such a difficult time.
