The safe city project in Rawalpindi has faced setback as surveillance gadgets, memory cards and a backup power system were stolen by unidentified persons. In a complaint lodged by a member of project staff, Talha Afzal at Pirwadhai Police Station, the thieves aimed two cameras located along Sheikh Rashid Bridge. Together with the cameras they also removed the UPS unit and two memory cards which were necessary to store any recorded footage.

Authorities say that the overall value of the theft is between Rs260,000. This consists of two special Safe city Cameras captioned GS2 and GS3 as well as a UPS at a cost of Rs90,000. The reason adjacent to the theft has not yet been clarified, thus it is under critical examination by the local police.

Police officials are checking the CCTV around the area and talking to witnesses in an effort to bring to book those perpetrating the vice. In the meantime, authorities have issued warning to the citizenry about possible security threats in the premises and that is working to regain surveillance powers in the shortest time possible.

The scrapping of such Safe City Cameras has brought into question the issue of security in the urban region, with gaps in such high-level monitoring. Law enforcement authorities are urging anyone who has some information to report it to help retrieve the stolen equipment and hopefully prevent future incidences.
