Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on termed the launch of digital wallets under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) a “major breakthrough” that will accelerate Pakistan’s shift toward a cashless economy and curb corruption.

Speaking at the rollout ceremony in Islamabad, where free mobile SIMs were also distributed to BISP beneficiaries, the prime minister congratulated the programme’s chairman, management, and stakeholders for the milestone. He praised Senator Rubina Khalid and the BISP secretary for their contributions, highlighting the programme’s role in reducing poverty and unemployment.

Recalling that BISP payments were disbursed digitally for the first time during last Ramadan, Shehbaz described digital wallets as a turning point for economic transparency and efficiency. “The sooner we move in this direction, the faster the country will grow. It saves time, speeds up work, and helps stamp out corruption,” he said.

He added that the initiative reflects the vision of the late Benazir Bhutto, noting that beneficiaries will now be able to receive funds securely and conveniently at their doorstep.
