The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has given reasons why the cost of mobile internet packages has shot up as of late; this is partly on the increase in prices due to inflation as well as the rising costs of operating services among the telecom companies. In an interview, the Director General of Commercial Affairs at PTA, Adil Umar Khalil pointed to escalating economic demands and costs of maintaining the services, as some of the factors that have compelled service providers to revise their tariffs on internet.
Khalil added that the expenses of up-keeping the network infrastructure and providing high-reliability services are on a sharp rise in the last few months. Notwithstanding that, mobile Internet rates in Pakistan are in line with the rest of the region. With the new pricing, Pakistan continues to have one of the lowest internet packages in the region, South Asia.
The regulator also pointed out future enhancements in mobile access such as spectrum auctions and improved right-of-way. Such efforts are likely to increase penetration or coverage and quality of services and stabilize the prices in the long run. These measures promise to deliver improved connectivity and more sound experiences of the internet as they are implemented to consumers.
