A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has claimed over 800 lives and injured more than 2,000 people, causing widespread devastation and urgent rescue efforts.

A devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday night, killing at least 800 people and injuring over 2,000 according to official reports. The 6.0 magnitude quake hit near Jalalabad and caused massive destruction across several provinces.

The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth, which intensified its impact, especially in rural areas where most houses are made of mud and bricks. Entire villages have been reduced to rubble and many people remain trapped under collapsed homes.

Emergency response teams have been dispatched, but efforts are being slowed by blocked roads and limited resources. Helicopters and military units are assisting with rescue operations, as local hospitals struggle to cope with the number of injured.
