The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, held a session to discuss the future of Pakistan’s telecom industry, with particular focus on Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service.
Starlink has formally applied for a Long Distance International (LDI) license in Pakistan. During the meeting, Senator Afnan Ullah criticized Musk for allegedly running discriminatory campaigns against Pakistanis on social media, questioning whether such a company should be permitted to operate in the country. Senator Anusha Rahman added that Musk’s background must be carefully scrutinized before any license is issued.
The committee has called officials from the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) and the Space Regulatory Authority to the next meeting for further deliberations, including the licensing process for Starlink.
