In a major step toward employment generation and sustainable mobility, Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Yasin has announced the launch of a new electric taxi scheme

The scheme, part of Punjab’s Transport 2030 Vision, will become operational within the next 15 days. It aims to provide a new source of income for unemployed individuals while reducing carbon emissions through eco-friendly vehicles.

Key Highlights of the Electric Taxi Scheme

  • Interest-free instalments: Electric taxis will be offered on easy, interest-free payments to support low-income groups.
  • Inclusive ownership options: The program will also introduce new electric bikes for unemployed individuals.
  • Modern transport expansion: Plans include 41 new depots across Punjab, 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030, and 1,000 EV charging stations.

Bilal Yasin also revealed that Lahore’s first tram service is expected to begin by February next year. In its initial phase, the tram will operate along Jail Road and Main Boulevard, later expanding to Canal Road.

Green Mobility Roadmap

The Transport Expo highlighted Punjab’s strategic shift toward sustainable transport. Starting in December 2025, electric buses will hit the roads, while autonomous vehicle testing is also planned. By 2030, the government targets to make 80% of the transport network electric, marking a significant leap toward cleaner and modern urban mobility.

Similar Initiatives in Sindh

Earlier, the Sindh Workers Welfare Board announced the distribution of 10,000 free electric motorcycles to female industrial workers. Sindh Labour Minister Shahid Thaheem stated that the scheme aims to empower women with better mobility while promoting green transport.
