Islamabad, Jan 10: Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” update, introduced in late 2024, is under fire for making scam messages appear legitimate.
The AI-powered features, designed to summarize and prioritize notifications, have flagged fraudulent messages as priority alerts on iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers
Apple’s new feature, which condenses notifications into a single summary and emphasizes urgent alerts, has faced some criticism for potentially aiding scams.
Apple Intelligence Makes Scam Messages, like an email falsely claiming an outstanding payment of $465, making it seem important even though it’s a scam.
This issue raises concerns about the effectiveness of AI tools in protecting users from fraudulent activities.
Reports suggest that the summarization process sometimes removes crucial context, which can make distinguishing legitimate messages from scams more challenging.
AI expert Daswin De Silva from La Trobe University highlights that users may be left with the additional task of verifying the authenticity of messages, which could lead to unnecessary confusion and time spent on filtering out scams.
He also points out that tech companies might be rushing AI integration without properly addressing these risks.
In response to the concerns, Apple has stated plans to update the feature, making it clearer when summaries are generated by AI.
Until the update is rolled out, experts advise users to verify flagged messages manually and be cautious when interacting with AI-generated summaries.
Its flagship features include notification summarising and prioritisation abilities. These use AI technology to summarise the meaning of multiple push notifications in a single message, or to flag certain alerts as a priority.
