At Apple’s recent event, the focus was primarily on software updates, with little attention given to hardware. However, reports suggest that Apple is actively working on two foldable devices: a 20.3-inch MacBook nearing completion and a 7.9-inch foldable iPhone.
Analyst Jeff Pu indicates that the foldable iPhone will feature an outward folding design similar to the Huawei Mate Xs 2, where a single display covers both the front and back when folded, unfolding into a seamless, flat display. This configuration, resembling the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold but folding outward, is expected to debut by the end of 2026 or possibly in 2027, according to different predictions. Meanwhile, the larger 20.3-inch foldable MacBook, resembling the ThinkPad X1 with its inward folding display and stowable wireless keyboard, is anticipated for release in 2025.
The outward folding design offers benefits such as eliminating the need for a cover display, reducing weight, thickness, and cost. It also allows for personalization and selfies using the main camera. However, it exposes the delicate foldable display, posing a significant drawback.
Inward folding designs, like that of the foldable MacBook, protect the flexible screen and enable adjustment for laptop-like usage. It’s unclear why the development of the foldable MacBook is progressing faster than that of the foldable iPhone, but the complexities associated with the outward folding design could be a contributing factor.
