Islamabad, Jan 25: Pakistan head coach Aqib Javed has sparked fresh debates on the importance of four-day cricket for players aiming to feature in Test matches, particularly regarding Shaheen Afridi’s absence from recent Test series. Afridi, considered one of the best fast bowlers globally, missed the South Africa tour and the ongoing home series against the West Indies, fueling criticism, especially given the bowler-friendly conditions in Cape Town and Centurion.

Workload Management vs. Four-Day Cricket

Initially, workload management ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy was cited as the reason for Afridi’s exclusion, but Javed clarified that his lack of recent four-day cricket was the main reason. The head coach explained that in Test cricket, fast bowlers need the stamina to bowl long spells and deliver over extended periods. Javed noted, “If you’ve been out of four-day cricket for months, it’s hard to maintain the energy levels required for the longer format.”

The Need for Stamina in Test Cricket

Javed emphasized the demands of Test cricket, particularly for fast bowlers. “You need stamina to bowl 25-30 overs a day. If you haven’t played four-day cricket, it’s challenging to be ready for the intensity of a Test match,” Javed said, further stressing that participation in leagues is beneficial but must be complemented by four-day cricket to ensure fitness and stamina.

Abbas’ Role in the South Africa Test

In addressing the Cape Town Test, where Mohammad Abbas was chosen over Afridi, Javed defended the decision. Abbas, making a return to the Test side after a three-year absence, played a pivotal role in taking the match to a dramatic finish. Javed explained, “If Shaheen had played, Abbas wouldn’t have had the opportunity. His performance was crucial in making the match competitive.”

Aqib Javed’s No-Nonsense Approach

Javed’s comments underscore his pragmatic approach to coaching, focusing on fitness, stamina, and performance. Despite his success coaching Afridi’s Lahore Qalandars to two PSL titles, Javed has maintained a standard for Afridi, ensuring consistency and readiness for the rigorous demands of Test cricket. This no-nonsense approach promises to benefit the future of Pakistan’s Test team, ensuring that all players are held to the same level of accountability, regardless of their status or past successes.
