LAHORE: A bill has been tabled in the Punjab Assembly today, which aims to preserve Punjab’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage. The proposed piece of legislation, if approved, will make Punjab’s mother tongue education a cornerstone of early learning.

The bill was introduced by government member Amjad Javed in the assembly session on Friday. The text of the bill says that Punjabi, Saraiki and other local languages ​​should be made a part of children’s education and cultural heritage.

These languages should also be taught as a compulsory subject in all government and private schools at the primary level, and also in religious madrasas, the bill urges.

The proposal says that the languages spoken in each district will be specified through an official gazette. The government will prepare textbooks in mother tongues for each district and distribute them free of charge.

According to the bill, special training will be given to teachers as well.

This step has been taken to connect the new generation with its culture and protect linguistic diversity. The bill was handed over to the relevant committee of the Punjab Assembly.

The committee will present a report in the house within two months.
