Following exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Australian Stand-in captain Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs).
The decision marks the end of an illustrious 50-over career for the experienced batter who represented Australia in 170 ODI matches scoring 5800 runs at an average of 43.28.
In a statement released by Cricket Australia on Wednesday, Smith reflected on his time in ODI cricket, describing it as a memorable journey.
The right-handed middle -order batter expressed gratitude for the experiences he had, emphasizing that he had enjoyed every moment on the field .
Smith highlighted winning two World Cups as one of the most significant achievements of his career. He was part the Australian side in 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups.
The legendary batter also acknowledged the support and camaraderie of his teammates throughout the years, calling them an integral part of his success.
The 34-year-old cricketer leaves the 50-over format with a remarkable record, having played a key role in Australia’s dominance in world cricket.
His retirement comes at a time when the team looks ahead to rebuilding for future challenges. While stepping away from ODIs, Smith is expected to continue his contributions in Test and T20 cricket.
