Islamabad, Mar 11 2025: Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed the March 2027 Australia-England Test at MCG will be a pink-ball day-night match.
The much-awaited red-ball match will commemorate the 150th anniversary of Test cricket.
Scheduled from March 11-15, the game will mark a significant milestone in cricket history, celebrating the first-ever Test match held at the same venue in 1877.
Unlike the original fixture and the Centenary Test in 1977, both of which were played with a red ball during the day, the upcoming anniversary Test will be held under lights.
The decision to schedule the match as a day-night Test was aimed at maximizing attendance, considering it falls within the Australian school and work year.
Additionally, the timing is expected to boost global television viewership, particularly in the UK, where the third session under lights will be broadcast at a convenient morning slot.
Cricket Australia Chief Executive, Todd Greenberg, appreciated the Victorian state government and the Melbourne Cricket Club for supporting the initiative.
odd Greenberg noted that the occasion would celebrate the evolution of Test cricket while ensuring wider audience engagement.
The 150th Anniversary Test will be part of a packed schedule for Australia in 2027. The team will first play a four-Test home series against New Zealand before embarking on a five-Test tour of India.
The one-off match against England will coincide with the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Though not part of the WTC, Australia could play the June 2027 final, followed by an away Ashes and the ODI World Cup.
