Islamabad, Mar 11 2025: An Australian radio presenter left his network after making misogynistic and disrespectful comments about the Australian women’s football team, the Matildas.
Marty Sheargold, speaking on the nationwide radio station Triple M, compared the players to “year 10 girls” and implied that their matches were boring.
The remarks of Marty Sheargold came during his drivetime show on Monday afternoon and were met with laughter from his co-hosts.
Sheargold apologized for his comments and, after failing to return to air, mutually parted ways with Southern Cross Austereo.
In a statement, Sheargold expressed his understanding of the severity of his remarks and apologized “sincerely to the Matildas and the broader organisation.”
The chief content officer, Dave Cameron, stated that SCA takes its responsibility to listeners seriously and that its programming must align with audience expectations.
He added that the network would take steps to support its staff and reflect on the incident.
The comments of Sheargold were condemned by various figures, including Minister for Sport, Anika Wells, who described them as “boorish, boring and wrong.”
Anika Wells highlighted the the success of Matildas, noting that their World Cup semi-final was Australia’s most-watched television event.
Australian Olympian Ambrosia Malone also criticized Sheargold, expressing concern over the impact his words could have on young girls listening to the show.
