Islamabad, Nov 29: Azerbaijan is considering significant investments in Pakistan’s M6 Sukkur-Hyderabad and M9 Karachi-Hyderabad motorways. Ambassador of Pakistan to Azerbaijan, Qasim Mohiuddin, shared this update during a meeting on Thursday that reviewed developments following a recent high-level delegation’s visit to Baku.

The M9 Motorway, spanning 136 km, is a six-lane road connecting Karachi and Hyderabad, while the M6 Motorway will extend 306 km to link Sukkur and Hyderabad. Both projects are integral to improving north-south connectivity in Sindh.

The meeting, chaired by Minister for Privatisation and Investment Abdul Aleem Khan, discussed Azerbaijan’s interest in investing through a G2G model and participating in the privatisation of state-owned enterprises. Ambassador Mohiuddin, attending via video link, emphasized Azerbaijan’s institutional eagerness to invest in Pakistan.

Minister Aleem stressed the need for swift resolutions to investment challenges with Central Asian Countries (CACs) and outlined plans to prepare for the upcoming Pak-Azerbaijan Joint Commission meeting on December 24. He noted the strategic importance of CACs as a gateway to Eastern Europe and expressed intent to enhance collaboration across privatisation, investment, and communication sectors. The minister also plans to engage with the ambassadors of Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan in separate meetings to advance these objectives.

The meeting also reviewed Pakistan’s representation at COP29 in Baku, where the country showcased its commitments prominently. Federal secretaries and the National Highway Authority (NHA) Chairman briefed attendees on progress, and focal persons were nominated to expedite preparations for Pakistan-Azerbaijan cooperation.
