Islamabad, June 7, 2025: Pakistan has concluded a landmark defense export agreement with Azerbaijan involving the sale of 40 JF-17 Block III fighter aircraft. The agreement, estimated to be worth between $1.6 billion and $4.2 billion, will enable Azerbaijan to modernize its air force with one of the latest versions of the JF-17 Thunder.

The JF-17 Block III comes equipped with state-of-the-art electronic systems, an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, and is compatible with extended-range PL-15 and PL-10 air-to-air missiles. Azerbaijan may also consider integrating Turkish Gokdogan and Bozdogan missiles, highlighting the strengthening defense cooperation among Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey.

This deal fits into Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air capabilities and reduce dependence on outdated Russian jets, especially amid changing security conditions in the South Caucasus region.

The agreement was finalized following a notable presentation of the JF-17 Block III at the ADEX-2024 defense show in Baku. The event was attended by President Ilham Aliyev, who commended the fighter jet’s performance and acknowledged Pakistan’s assistance. The aircraft will be handed over in stages, accompanied by training and technical support.
