He highlighted potential trade sectors, including Bangladesh’s exports of coconut and coal, and Pakistan’s exports of leather, meat, rice, sugar, fish, and coal.

Discussions are underway to establish direct flights and shipping routes between the two nations to bolster trade connectivity.

Economic Indicators and Future Goals

LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad noted that Pakistan and Bangladesh, being the largest economies in the SAARC region after India, should leverage regional trade opportunities for mutual benefit.

He pointed out that Bangladesh’s GDP has reached $437 billion, while Pakistan’s stands at $373 billion.

The current bilateral trade volume is $718 million, with Pakistan exporting goods worth $661 million to Bangladesh and importing goods valued at $57 million.

Shad expressed optimism about increasing the trade volume to at least $2 billion, with aspirations of reaching $510 billion in the near future.

He identified pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, sports goods, and auto parts as sectors with significant untapped potential.

He also advocated for pursuing a free trade agreement (FTA) to further enhance trade, given the favorable political and economic environment between the two countries.

Defense Cooperation and Diplomatic Engagements

The LCCI President appreciated Bangladesh’s growing interest in defense cooperation with Pakistan, citing a recent visit by the principal staff officer of Bangladesh’s Armed Forces Division as a significant development in bilateral defense ties.
