Islamabad 1 August: The Sindh government has sharply increased traffic violation penalties, introducing heavy fines of up to Rs 200,000 for driving against traffic, also known as “wrong-way driving”. The decision follows a surge in fatal road accidents across the province in 2024.

According to the new traffic enforcement framework:

  • Government vehicles found driving the wrong way will be fined up to Rs200,000
  • Private cars: up to Rs100,000
  • Motorcyclists: up to Rs25,000

Other updated penalties include:

  • Driving without a valid licence: Rs50,000 for car drivers and Rs25,000 for bikers
  • One-wheeling or reckless stunts: Rs100,000 for the first offense, with stricter penalties for repeat violations

The crackdown was announced during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar. Key reforms include making vehicle fitness certification mandatory for all types of vehicles, banning certain types of three-wheelers, and imposing strict rules on heavy vehicles such as tankers and dumpers, which are now required to install trackers, sensors, and multiple onboard cameras.

The government also plans to introduce e-challans delivered to vehicle owners’ registered addresses. If unpaid, the challans will block any future sale or transfer of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is seeking legal empowerment for its city wardens to issue fines of up to Rs15,000 for wrong-way driving on urban roads. Critics warn, however, that without clear legal authority and oversight, this could lead to misuse or harassment.
