Islamabad, Dec 10: A disturbing occurrence in Islamabad has exposed the Traffic Police Department’s extreme corruption. After bribing traffic police officers, a blind person was able to obtain a driver’s license, which raised serious worries about road safety in the city.
Investigative journalist Iqrar ul Hasan and the ARY News Sar-e-Aam team discovered this problem during a sting operation. Following a tip, the team discovered that driving licenses were being granted without the required medical examinations or testing. A traffic police officer and a middleman were apprehended during the operation taking a Rs. 30,000 bribe to get a license.
The blind applicant’s medical test was taken by someone else as a way for the Sar-e-Aam team to illustrate the loose procedure. Surprisingly, the license was granted without the applicant taking any driving, medical, or theoretical exams, revealing serious flaws in the system. Such activities seriously jeopardize public safety in addition to undermining the licensing procedure.
In addition to putting lives in danger, granting licenses to unqualified drivers erodes public confidence in the system. To stop such activities and restore the integrity of the licensing process, authorities must act swiftly.
