Islamabad, Mar 11 2025: At SXSW 2025, Bluesky CEO Jay Graber made a subtle yet impactful statement not just through her speech but also through her choice of clothing.

She appeared on stage wearing a plain black T-shirt, a look often adopted by female tech executives aiming to shift focus toward their ideas rather than appearances. However, her outfit was more than just a style choice it was a deliberate message.

The T-shirt displayed a Latin phrase: “Mundus sine caesaribus,” translating to “a world without Caesars.” This was a clear response to Mark Zuckerberg’s recently viral shirt, which read “Aut Zuck aut nihil,” a play on the classic phrase “Aut Caesar aut nihil” (“Either Caesar or nothing”).

Zuckerberg’s choice of words, likening himself to Julius Caesar, symbolizes the centralized power he wields over his platform. In contrast, Graber’s statement reinforces the vision of Bluesky as a decentralized alternative to conventional social media giants.

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber says, an open-source, decentralized network, is designed to hand control back to its users rather than being governed by a singular authority. Graber emphasized this during her keynote address, stating:

“If a billionaire decided to buy out Bluesky or take control, users would still have the option to break away and migrate to another version. The network already supports multiple applications, and anyone can develop a new one if they choose.”

This decentralized structure ensures that no sole entity no “Caesar” can monopolize the platform. Graber’s message, embedded in both her words and her attire, underscores Bluesky’s commitment to transparency.

User autonomy, and breaking away from the dominance of tech giants like Facebook.
