Skardu, July 21, 2025: An avalanche struck near Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, killing two people and leaving several others missing, officials said on Monday.

Among the victims are Fahad Islam and Dr Mashal Saad, member of a 22-person family caught in the disaster. Saad Islam, owner of the Shahida Islam Medical and Teaching Hospital Lodhran, suffered a leg fracture and is reported conscious.

His son is missing after being swept away in a flash flood.

The avalanche in Skardu comes amid heavy monsoon rains and widespread flooding across Pakistan’s northern regions. GB and Kashmir has experienced severe weather over recent weeks, triggering floods, landslides and avalanches.

Authorities had to close down the Karakoram Highway, due to mudslides, further complicating rescue and relief efforts.

Officials continue search operations in the difficult terrain, warning of further risks as monsoon rains persist.
