Islamabad, Mar 12, 2025: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to eliminate all wild mulberry trees in Islamabad and introduce thousands of native plants to combat the city’s growing pollen allergy crisis.
This decision was reached in a high-level meeting at CDA headquarters, presided over by Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa.
The session was attended by environmental consultant Rizwan Mehboob, specialists from Baku, and senior officials from the authority’s environment division.
Experts at the meeting pointed out that every spring, a significant portion of Islamabad’s population experiences severe allergic reactions due to pollen.
The primary culprit behind this issue is the wild mulberry tree, which releases excessive pollen into the air, negatively impacting thousands of residents.
Chairman Randhawa has ordered the removal of over 10,000 wild mulberry trees from the Shakarparian area. These will be replaced with environmentally sustainable native plant species to enhance air quality and mitigate allergy risks.
Pollen is a fine, powder-like substance that plants, trees, and grasses release for reproduction.
However, wild mulberry pollen disperses widely through the air and has been identified as a key trigger for respiratory allergies and asthma-related complications in Islamabad.

For years, residents have endured severe allergy outbreaks each spring due to these trees.
By implementing this initiative, the CDA aims to reduce health hazards and create a more breathable environment.
The replacement of allergenic trees with three eco-friendly plant species is expected to significantly benefit the community.
This project is projected to yield major health improvements, particularly during February and March when pollen levels peak.
With this strategic move, Islamabad’s air quality is set to improve, ensuring a healthier future for its residents.
