Islamabad, Dec 16: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly evaluating Sri Lanka as a potential venue for India’s matches in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, alongside the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which remains the favored choice. This unexpected development introduces a new dimension to the hybrid model agreed upon by Pakistan and India after prolonged negotiations.
Key Aspects of the Hybrid Model
Under the arrangement, India will play its Champions Trophy matches at a neutral venue, with Lahore set to host the final if India does not qualify. The compromise also extends to the T20 World Cup in 2026, where Pakistan will not play its matches in India. Instead, Sri Lanka will host all of Pakistan’s games during the tournament.
The agreement between the PCB and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been finalized. After formal sign-offs, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to make an official announcement.
Venue Talks Intensify
Although Dubai is the ICC’s preferred location for hosting India’s matches, Sri Lanka has emerged as a strong contender due to its potential to offer better financial and logistical terms. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently met ICC Director Mubashir Usmani in Dubai to deliberate on the pros and cons of each venue option.
Sri Lanka’s inclusion has reportedly taken ICC officials by surprise, but the decision will likely hinge on the economic benefits and operational feasibility for all stakeholders.
What’s Next?
The ICC is expected to finalize and announce the venue plan soon, as both boards work to balance logistical challenges and financial interests while ensuring smooth execution of the high-stakes tournament. The hybrid model signals a significant step in navigating strained cricketing ties between the two nations.
