Islamabad, Mar 14, 2025: Chicken rates have skyrocketed in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, making poultry an expensive commodity for consumers, as sugar prices also remain on an upward trend.
Despite regulatory price controls, the authorities seem incapable of stabilizing the market.
In local markets, live poultry is being sold at Rs. 550 per kilogram, whereas chicken meat is priced at Rs. 800 per kilogram.
The wholesale price has surged to Rs. 19,000 per maund, significantly exceeding the official rate of Rs. 412 per kilogram set by the government.
Vice President of the Poultry Association Rawalpindi, Khursheed Abbasi, stated that chicken demand has increased by 40% during Ramazan, but supply remains insufficient.

He cautioned that if the shortage persists, prices may escalate further as Eidul Fitr approaches.
Retailers’ Union Secretary Faisal Khan also pointed out that wholesale prices are rising daily, intensifying the affordability crisis for the public.
In reaction to this surge, Citizens’ Action Committee President Malik Zaheer Awan has urged people to boycott chicken consumption until Eid as a form of protest against the soaring prices.
Simultaneously, egg prices have also seen a notable rise. Broiler eggs are now being sold at Rs. 287 per dozen, while desi eggs are available at Rs. 640 per dozen in open markets.
