China’s plan to build a massive “super embassy” in London has sparked alarm among UK officials and residents, who fear it could become a hub for espionage activities.
The proposed compound, set to be China’s largest diplomatic mission in the world, will be located on the site of the former Royal Mint near Tower Hill. The complex is designed to house hundreds of staff and high-tech facilities, making it far larger than any other embassy in the UK.
Security experts have warned that the scale of the project raises concerns about surveillance risks, with critics arguing the embassy could be used to monitor Chinese dissidents, collect intelligence, and expand Beijing’s influence in Britain.

Local residents have also opposed the plan, citing fears over safety, disruption, and the potential for the area to become a flashpoint for protests. In December 2022, Tower Hamlets council rejected planning permission, but China has continued to push for the project.
The UK government is under growing pressure to clarify its stance, especially as relations with Beijing remain tense over issues such as human rights, Hong Kong, and technology security.
