Frank Duckworth, the co-creator of cricket’s Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, passed away at the age of 84 last week, as announced by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS).
Duckworth, alongside Tony Lewis, developed the method to adjust targets in rain-affected limited overs cricket matches, replacing the older rain rule.
His work became crucial in ensuring fair outcomes in matches disrupted by weather conditions, including high-profile events like the 1992 ODI World Cup semi-final between England and South Africa.
Duckworth’s contributions to cricket were recognized with the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honor in 2010. The International Cricket Council (ICC) expressed condolences, acknowledging Duckworth’s significant impact on the sport through his enduring method, which continues to be integral to international cricket today.
