Islamabad, July 17, 2025: Germany is once again opening doors to aspiring researchers worldwide. The DAAD PhD Scholarships 2026 under the Ancient Languages and Texts (ALT) program are now accepting applications. This fully funded opportunity offers international scholars a chance to pursue cutting-edge research in historical texts, ancient civilizations, and religious studies right in the heart of Berlin.

Funded by the prestigious German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through its Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP), this scholarship spans four years (2026–2030) and is hosted at BerGSAS – the Berliner Antike-Kolleg. Selected candidates will be affiliated with either Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or Freie Universität Berlin, two globally recognized institutions in the humanities.

What the Scholarship Offers

Successful applicants will receive:

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be non-German citizens and meet the following criteria:

  • Hold (or be close to completing) a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Philology, Ancient History, Egyptology, Religious Studies, Linguistics, Theology, or Jewish Studies
  • Have completed their Master’s after March 1, 2020
  • Must not have resided in Germany continuously before December 1, 2024
  • Must not hold a PhD
  • Possess B2 English proficiency (C1 required for Freie Universität Berlin)
  • Demonstrated knowledge in ancient languages linked to their research area

About the Program

The ALT program bridges ancient knowledge with modern tools, focusing on ancient texts, inscriptions, and papyri. It integrates philology, digital humanities, and cultural studies, offering a multidisciplinary research environment for exploring the ancient world with modern perspectives.
