Islamabad – 12 May, 2025: Karachi has witnessed a surge in fatal road accidents involving heavy vehicles, with at least 110 people losing their lives over the past 132 days.

The most recent incident took place near the Northern Bypass, where a speeding dumper collided with a car, killing all three passengers on board.

Police officials reported that the victims—Sulaiman, his son Usama, and their cousin Faraz—were travelling to Gulshan-e-Maymar when the crash occurred.

The dumper driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. At Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, grieving family members confirmed that all three victims belonged to the same household.

Sulaiman, a father of four, worked in the transport sector, while Faraz had recently been married.

The family lived in the Band Murad Norani Hotel area of Manghopir.

This incident adds to a growing list of casualties from heavy vehicle collisions in the city.

According to compiled data, trailers have caused 42 deaths, water tankers 26, dumpers 22, Mazdas 10, and buses 10.

Despite regulations, the unchecked movement of heavy transport continues to endanger public safety.

In light of mounting concerns, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has introduced stricter safety protocols.

HTVs, including dumpers and tankers, will now be required to install three surveillance cameras—covering the front, rear, and interior of the vehicle—to monitor driving behaviour.

Additional safety measures include speed limits of 30 km/h within city limits, and restricted movement during the day.

Dumpers have been specifically banned from city roads between 10pm and 6am. HTVs will also be equipped with guardrails and GPS trackers, with real-time data shared with the DIG Traffic office.

These steps were announced shortly after transporters ended a strike that had halted port operations.

As part of the agreement, they have committed to ensuring vehicle fitness within six months and providing progress reports every 10 days.
