Unprecedented floods have hit Kashmir, smashing a 50-year record of rainfall and inflicting great devastation. The area was hit by 360 mm of precipitation, which caused riverbanks to overflow with massive destruction of bridges and roads. The day-to-day lives have been greatly affected and the mobile networks, broadband and telephone networks suspended. The water level of the Jhelum River has gone beyond the danger line raising alarm among the authorities as more flooding is likely to occur.

There have been at least 37 fatalities in occupied Jammu and Doda as a result of rain related incidents. Several days later, authorities warned that rains may continue heavy, and all schools and other educational establishments in the valley were closed. There is high alert on emergency services and local authorities are organizing rescue and relief efforts.

The after effects of the heavy rains are far-reaching even outside Kashmir. Other Indian states like Himachal Pradesh and Punjab situated to the north are also struggling with their over flowing rivers in places like Manali and Pathankot which adds to the devastation by the extreme weather. Societies are experiencing damage of property, road blockages and delays in transportation.
