Islamabad, 15 April 2025: At 43, Shoaib Malik still plays in global franchise leagues, including the ongoing PSL for Quetta Gladiators.
However, his participation has sparked fresh debate in cricketing circles.
Former Pakistan batter Mohammad Yousuf has urged PCB to take a firm stance on the eligibility criteria for players in domestic tournaments like the PSL.
Yousuf questioned Malik’s dual role in Pakistan cricket — switching between being a mentor and an active player.

He recalled the appointment of Malik as a mentor for the Stallions during the Champions One-Day Cup last year.
He said the board should clearly define whether someone can serve as both a mentor and a player without causing a conflict of interest.
Speaking on a TV panel, Yousuf responded to a question about his prolonged playing career by suggesting that if age was not a factor, even he could return to play.
He argued that the PCB must draw boundaries to ensure that younger, deserving players are not sidelined.
Afridi, meanwhile, offered a more balanced view. He said that Malik, given his fitness and form, has the right to continue playing.

However, he also acknowledged the importance of creating space for younger talent.
He suggested that senior players like Malik could skip a few games to allow opportunities for upcoming cricketers who have earned their place.
The discussion intensified when the host pointed out that his inclusion might be blocking the path for a youngster, especially considering his recent form.
In two PSL 2025 appearances so far, Malik has managed only 14 runs and has not taken a wicket.
Shoaib Malik last represented Pakistan in a T20 international in 2021 against Bangladesh.
The ongoing debate highlights growing concerns about balancing experience and youth in Pakistan cricket.
