Islamabad, July 8, 2025: Grigor Dimitrov was two sets ahead against world number one Jannik Sinner before he had to withdraw due to an injury. The Bulgarian tennis star was leading the match with 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 when he fell on the grass, holding his right chest muscle after firing an ace.

He showed clear signs of pain, causing Sinner to quickly approach and offer assistance. Quick medical attention was given to Dimitrov however, he soon left the court briefly before returning in tears to shake Sinner’s hand.

This isn’t the first instance where Dimitrov has had to exit the court in heartbreaking fashion, as he also pulled out injured from his opening-round matches at the Australian Open and the French Open.

The match’s ending allowed the Italian player to progress into the quarterfinals at SW19 for the second time in his career.

Sharing his sorrow over the unexpected finish, the 19-time ATP tour title winner remarked that this was “not the ending we wished for.”

Earlier in the match, Sinner also paused for medical assistance after taking a tumble and sustaining a suspected elbow injury, for which he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, July 8.

“It was an unfortunate fall – I checked the video and it didn’t seem a tough one but I still felt it a lot during serve and forehands especially,” he stated during the press conference.

Dimitrov was the first seeded opponent Jannik Sinner encountered at this year’s Wimbledon, offering the crowd an electrifying contest as both players pushed each other’s limits.

Interestingly, Grigor Dimitrov holds the record for the highest number of retirements in ATP Tour matches, having been forced to quit 12 times due to injury.
