The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) is set to issue new licenses for Direct-To-Home (DTH) services, which could attract investments ranging from $2 billion to $3 billion, as per the Economic Survey of Pakistan for the fiscal year 2023-34.
The survey highlights that the increased investment through these new licenses will have a multiplier effect on the growth of media production companies, advertising agencies, performing arts, and job opportunities for trained media personnel and journalists. It emphasizes the potential benefits of licensing DTH satellite TV channels, FM radios, and teleport services.
PEMRA has already issued three licenses for the introduction of DTH in Pakistan. This significant initiative is expected to propel Pakistan’s media sector forward in terms of technology and employment opportunities. Currently, there are over 140 Pakistani satellite TV stations and 35 channels with Landing Rights permission to broadcast in Pakistan. Over the years, the electronic media sector in Pakistan has reportedly attracted investments totaling between $4 and $5 billion.
Direct-To-Home (DTH) technology enables viewers to access multiple TV channels directly broadcasted via satellites to their dish receivers. This not only enhances service quality by eliminating issues commonly associated with cable services but also eliminates the need for monthly cable fees. Additionally, individuals residing in remote areas with no cable access can still enjoy television programming by installing a dish receiver at home. DTH offers superior broadcast quality and provides access to channels that may not be available through traditional cable operators.
