Islamabad, Feb 9: The Sindh government has taken a decisive step to improve Karachi’s traffic situation by imposing a daytime ban on the entry of dumpers and heavy vehicles into the city. Under the new regulations, these vehicles will only be allowed to operate between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM. The move is aimed at minimizing road accidents caused by large trucks and ensuring smoother traffic flow in the metropolis.
Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, following the directives of Chief Minister Sindh, convened an emergency meeting with key officials, including the Inspector General of Sindh Police, Commissioner Karachi, and heads of the Transport and Traffic Departments. The high-level discussion focused on tackling the city’s growing traffic congestion and road safety concerns.

During the meeting, authorities outlined a plan for the physical verification of all heavy vehicles and their drivers to ensure compliance with safety standards. Furthermore, all commercial vehicles operating in Karachi will be required to obtain a QR Code-certified certificate from the Transport Department, a measure designed to regulate and monitor their movement more effectively.
In another significant decision, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board has been directed to transition its waste collection operations to nighttime within the next three months. Similarly, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has been given a month to conduct a comprehensive safety inspection of its fleet of water tankers.
Addressing the increasing number of road accidents involving motorcyclists who account for 65% of vehicles on Karachi’s roads the government has decided to fast-track the introduction of a province-wide Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS). This system will ensure that motorcycles and other vehicles meet safety standards before being allowed on the roads.
To further enforce road discipline, the government has announced a fourfold increase in traffic fines, with strict penalties, including FIRs, for reckless drivers. Additionally, an extensive public awareness campaign on traffic regulations will be launched to educate citizens on road safety.
Emphasizing long-term traffic solutions, the Chief Secretary highlighted the need to revive and strengthen the Traffic Engineering Bureau. The initiative aims to develop sustainable infrastructure, enforce stricter regulations, and implement modern traffic management strategies to ease Karachi’s persistent congestion issues.
