ISLAMABAD: The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has issued a warning of severe dust storms and hailstorms in Pakistan, between May 27 and June 1.

According to a notification issued by the NEOC, severe dust storm is expected from May 27 (Tuesday) in Western and Southern Pakistan, especially Balochistan.

The pressure levels may exceed 1,000 µg/m³. Dust is likely to ease gradually by Tuesday night. Strong winds and storm could damage crops, vehicles, power lines and may also reduce visibility, the NEOC said.

Apart from dust storms, there is also the possibility of rain spells and thunderstorms. The NEOC said that this strong western weather system is expected across Pakistan, which might bring intermittent rain spells, thunderstorms, strong winds and hailstorms. This weather phenomenon is likely to be more prevalent in Punjab & Balochistan.

There is also a risk of hailstorm and landslides in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK).

However, for Sindh, primarily hot and dry conditions are predicted with no significant rain.

CAUTION FOR CITIZENS

The NEOC advises general public to avoid trees, billboards & unstable structures during these days when the risk of dust storms and hailstorms is high.Vehicles should also be parked in covered areas to prevent damage from hailstorm.

Moreover, citizens are advised to limit movement during storms and avoid unnecessary travel.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Disaster Alert mobile app can be used for more updates.

ADVISORY FOR FARMERS

The NEOC urges farmers to ensure crop safety, especially for crops that are ready but yet to be harvested.

The advisory also urges to stay away from loose infrastructure, and to keep cattle and other farm animals away from such buildings as well, to prevent any loss of life and property.
