The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training is poised to receive a significant boost in government funding in the upcoming fiscal year.
As per Education Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, the Planning Commission has allocated Rs. 20.25 billion for the ministry in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2024-25. This marks an almost 140 percent increase from the Rs. 8.5 billion allotted in the previous fiscal year of 2023-24. Recently, the federal government also reinstated the budget for the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to Rs. 65 billion for the financial year 2024-25.
HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed mentioned that the government had initially reduced the budget to Rs. 25 billion but has now restored it. With this reinstated budget, the HEC can continue providing necessary funding to universities across provinces without any interruptions.
This decision has been formally communicated to the HEC chairman by the Ministry of Finance through an official letter. Additionally, alongside the budget restoration, the Planning Commission has also reinstated the HEC’s development budget to Rs. 59 billion, which had previously been slashed to Rs. 21 billion.
