Islamabad, July 24, 2025: Liam Dawson returns to Test cricket after 8 years, claiming a key wicket vs India with calm precision and strong comeback at Old Trafford.

Liam Dawson made a striking return to Test cricket after eight years as he took the field for England against India in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. On a pitch that gave some grip and bounce, he bowled 15 steady overs and claimed the important wicket of India’s in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal who was looking set on 58.

It was Dawson first Test wicket in nearly 8 years and he looked clearly emotional as his teammates ran up to him to congratulate him. India had made a strong start to their innings, with Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma putting together a solid opening stand of 78 but England fought back well.

The turning point came when Rishabh Pant, looking hard to stop on 37 was forced to retire hurt after injuring his foot. The injury seemed serious enough to warrant scans and it disrupted India’s rhythm just as they were moving towards strong score. By the end of the first day, India went 264 for 4 and the game was balanced.

Although the match has not been over yet, Dawson’s strong comeback and early breakthrough helped England stay competitive. His control, composure and ability to step into the side after so long were clearly noticed. As long as the pitch continues to support spin and conditions remain same, Dawson is expected to play not just the rest of this Test but possibly stay in the squad for the remainder of the series.

His return has added a key layer to England’s bowling options and his presence on the field has already made a quiet but significant difference.
